A dictionary of foreign vocabulary
In 1861, at the age of 25, Alexey Davydovich Mikhelson compiled the “Explanatory Dictionary of Foreign Words That Have Entered Use in the Russian Language, with an Indication of Their Roots”. It went through twelve editions and was intended for students and professors. But by long-standing tradition it was also, without fail, the desk book of any cultivated person. Mikhelson's work had a considerable influence on the development of Russian lexicography and is still valued as an important historical source.
